  Studying at the Hilberry

The Hilberry Repertory Theatre operates on the principle that the most effective means of theatre training is the production of classic plays in rotating repertory.

All members of the Hilberry Company are students who will earn an MFA in Theatre. During the course of their three years in the program they receive free tuition, health and dental insurance, and a bi-weekly stipend (currently about $1350/month). The HIlberry is able to make this offer because the Theatre operates like a professional, not-for-profit theatre, and has both earned and unearned revenue to support students.

Hilberry students are involved in over 120 performances of seven different shows before an audience of nearly 45,000 people each season.

The program is directed intensively toward production. Academic classes are required for students, but the major learning experience is derived from the production of a challenging repertory of plays before a live audience.

Repertory theatre training is demanding because everything is always in a state of change: several shows are running, others are in rehearsal, and another is being cast. There are no “stars” in the Hilberry Company. The troupe is made up of conscientious actors, designers, and managers of substantial ability who are dedicated to working as an ensemble for the production of the season.

The MFA curriculum is a three-year program of intensive practical training. The central component of the program is frequent performance, production, and management under professional conditions with the Hilberry Repertory Company. Academic courses are intended as a supplement to this practical training. At least sixty-five percent of the credits toward the degree are in the student’s major area of concentration. Specializations are offered in Acting, Scenic Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Stage Management, and Theatre Management.
