Why Train in a Repertory Company Like the Hilberry?

The Hilberry Repertory Theatre Company was founded on the principle that the most effective means of theatre training can be obtained through the production of classic plays in a repertory system.

Hilberry students are involved in over 80 performances of six different shows before an audience of nearly 45,000 people each season.

The program is directed intensively toward production. Academic classes are required for students, but the major learning experience is derived from the production of a challenging repertory of plays before a live audience.

Repertory theatre training is demanding because everything is always in a state of change: several shows are running, others are in rehearsal, and another is being cast. There are no “stars” in the Hilberry Company. The troupe is made up of conscientious actors, designers, and managers of substantial ability who are dedicated to working as an ensemble for the production of the season.

All tuition and fees are paid by the department and/or the university.

Graduate research assistantships are granted to all admitted members of the Hilberry Company in the areas of acting, scenic design, costume design, lighting design, stage management and theatre management.

Stipends and benefits for the 2008-09 academic year are as follows:

$9,454 Tuition and Fee Waivers (10 credit hours/semester)
$4,002 Medical and Dental Insurance
$13,447 Assistantship Stipend
$26,903 Total

The State of Michigan recently passed a bill that allows a film incentive. Officially called the film production credit, is a refundable, assignable taxcredit of up to 42% of the amount of a production company’s expenditures (depending upon type) that are incurred in producing a film or other media entertainment project in Michigan. As a result dozens of films have been scheduled to film in the Metro-Detroit area.
