Student Matinee Information

Educational Value

Wayne State University's graduate and undergraduate theatre companies are located in the cultural center of Detroit. The undergraduate company performs at the historic Bonstelle Theatre, while the Hilberry Repertoy Theatre is home to the graduate company. The Hilberry company consists of a resident group of actors, designers, stage managers, and theatre managers selected from across North America and internationally.

Playguides

All educators are provided with our Playguide, which includes a brief play synopsis, background information on the play and its historical/literary context. The playguide helps students identify principle themes and contemporary resonance as well as familiarize and prepare them for the production. This tool will enhance your theatre experience and connect your classroom to our stage!

Playguides for the following shows are available in PDF format to download here:
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)
As You Like It
The Taming of the Shrew (at the Bonstelle Theatre 4/18/2008)
There is no Playguide for "Black Nativity" (at the Bonstelle Theatre 12/7/2007)

Talkbacks

Following each student matinee performance, students have the opportunity  to interact with our actors and production crew in a moderated ”talkback” session.  These sessions give students the time to ask questions of the company and discuss the ideas raised in the play.

Workshops and Tours

Black Theatre Program

“Our theatre is alive and vital .  It’s daring.  It is an essential component of community life.  We retain a strong commitment to celebrating the genius of African-Americans in the diaspora.  Welcome!”
- Edward G. Smith, former BTP Director

The Black Theatre Program provides classes and performance opportunities for the university and the Detroit community as well as providing production opportunities for local playwrites.  The practice of the program is to explore the black experience in America which necessarily acknowledges other cultures as they impact upon the reality of African American life.
