About Wayne State University
Wayne State University (WSU) is one of Michigan’s major research universities. It is a
leader among the nation’s urban campuses and among the ten largest autonomous
institutions of higher education in the United States, with a student body of over 33,000
and a combined faculty of over 2,000. WSU’s Hilberry Theatre is nationally and
internationally known with alumni in almost every U.S. major city.
Designated as a Carnegie I Research University, WSU has a number of nationally acclaimed
graduate and professional programs, of which theatre is one. Nearly half of
the degrees granted by the University are from graduate and professional schools.
Wayne State University’s Department of Theatre is a member of NAST (National
Association of Schools of Theatre), and ATHE (the Association for Theatre in Higher
Education). Theatre at WSU has grown from a single course in play production in 1929
to a comprehensive graduate and undergraduate program. Its three theatres play
annually to a combined audience of more than 60,000.
Over the years, the WSU theatres have been awarded the prestigious Governor’s Arts
Organization Award, as well as frequent honors from Detroit’s major newspapers, The
Detroit Free Press, and The Oakland Press, including “Best Local Theatre Company,”
“Theatre of the Year,” “Best Play,” “Best Director,” and many individual awards for
members of the graduate company. WSU alumni have gone on to receive Oscar, Tony,
Golden Globe, Helen Hayes, Cable Ace, and Emmy Awards and nominations.
