Detroit, Michigan
Detroit is an exciting and diverse city with
a metropolitan population of over five
million. As part of the University Cultural
Center, WSU is located near the Detroit
Institute of Arts, the Charles H. Wright
Museum of African American History, the
Detroit Historical Museum, and the Detroit
Public Library. In addition to the Cultural
Center, Detroit’s major cultural institutions
include the Henry Ford Museum and
Greenfield Village, Detroit Symphony
Orchestra, Michigan Opera Theatre, and the
annual Detroit Jazz Festival – the largest free jazz festival in North America.
The Hilberry,
Bonstelle and Studio Theatres are located in the heart of Detroit’s theatre district.
National Broadway touring shows are presented at the Fox, Masonic Temple, and Fisher
Theatres. Professional theatre is produced locally by 1515 Broadway, the Gem, Detroit
Repertory, Meadow Brook, Plowshares, Heartlande, Planet Ant, and the Jewish Ensemble
Theatres, among others. The Detroit Music Hall and State Theatre provide venues for
dance companies and popular music performances. Many Hilberry and WSU theatre
alumni choose to make Detroit their professional home, which has created a unique
network of theatre professionals.
